Eastern Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the DR Congo, is experiencing rapid population growth, expected to double from 300 million in 2023 to 600 million by 2050. This surge is driving increased demand for animal protein (eggs, milk, and meat). Despite having a livestock population of over 550 million, the region faces significant feed deficits, with Kenya experiencing a 60% shortfall. Challenges such as remote livestock husbandry, poor breed quality, and issues with feed availability, quality, and cost hinder the livestock sector's performance.
To address these issues, the region needs to adopt new strategies, including the use of innovative science and technology, and learn from global best practices. The animal feed industry is currently grappling with high costs, low quality, and access to raw materials, compounded by regulatory and technological adoption challenges. The Association of Kenya Feed Manufacturers (AKEFEMA) is organizing the First AKEFEMA Feeds Exhibition and Conference to promote knowledge sharing and innovation in the livestock industry, aiming to build resilience and improve feed security in the region.
