Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, causing diarrhoea or gut upsets, are common problems for dogs and cats. Stress due to transport or diary changes are examples for triggers. In Situations like this, pets are particularly susceptible to diseases of pathogenic origin. Other common diseases are, for example, endoparasitic infestation or hyperthyroidism. A typical sign of health problems like this appears with a dull and rough coat of hair or damaged skin.

Regularly, antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections and diseases. Unfortunately, they destroy all bacteria in the gut, creating an imbalance in the gut microbiome. So how can you support the health and wellbeing of your pet in the best way?

Probiotics to confer a health benefit.

Suffering from a bacterial imbalance, an intake of probiotic can help to re-establish a healthy gut flora. It also helps in order of digestive problems, like diarrhoea and inflammatory diseases, as it will alleviate the symptoms and the need of additional treatment. Especially young and elderly animals are prone to different health problems and infections due to a weak immune system. Another well-known problem of dogs and cats is that they tend to eat foreign species food or carcasses. The foreign bacteria absorbed causes food poisoning or an upset stomach. Thanks to probiotics the digestive system can recover quicker and build up a defence against harmful bacteria.

A vitamin boost makes the difference.

Vitamins are organic compounds, which are essential to maintain different functions in the organism. Their spectrum of mode of action is versatile. For instance, they support the immune defense, make use of nutrients, help to build muscles and bones, capture and use energy and heal wounds. They are divided into two main groups, water- and liquid-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins can be transported directly through the blood and are not stored in the body. This means, that they need to be regularly refilled over the diet. Fat-soluble vitamins need fat in order to dissolve and can only be transported in the blood trough carrier proteins. These vitamins can be stored in fat cells in the body considered as an important reserve source in situations of increased demand.

Managing Large Litters.

Breeding progress has delivered bigger litters—but not without costs. Sow breeding goals have changed over the past few decades with a focus on selecting higher ovulation rates and large litter sizes. Not only does this place increased demand and pressure on sows, but large litters increase birth weight variabilityt, competition at the udder, and pre-weaning losses. This newsletter explains practical, science-based ways to support sow health, colostrum and milk supply, and early piglet care. You’ll also see how water-based delivery and farm-individual feeding concepts can boost uniformity and weaning success.
